Spectacular scenery

A view of Ingleborough
Ingleborough, viewed from Whernside

The perfect position of Pinecroft on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and within easy reach of a whole range of magnificent scenery, natural wonders and modern amenities, means that you will never be short of things to do and places to visit. Ingleton itself is tucked away at the very foot of Ingleborough - one of the famous Three Peaks. A well-defined path leads to its 724 metre-high summit and with an early start, it is possible to conquer Ingleborough and the other two peaks - Whernside and Pen-y-ghent - in one day.

A more gentle stroll, near to the village, which is set amongst waterfalls and wooded glens, is the famous Waterfalls Walk. Hollybush Spout, Baxenghyll Gorge and Snow Falls are just a few of the delightful names given to the falls, but the most impressive of all is probably Thornton Force, which tumbles 15 metres into a pool surrounded by a natural amphitheatre.

The neighbouring countryside offers a wealth of peaceful walks amidst limestone pavements, gentle hills, historic villages, winding mountain roads and picturesque hill farms.

Underground

Beneath the surface of Ingleborough, there exists another world, which potholers and caving fanatics from throughout the country and abroad come to explore. Several spectacular caves are readily accessible to the general public. The celebrated White Scar Caves are one and a half miles from the village. Visitors can travel more than a mile through a stunning display of stalactites and stalagmites in illuminated caverns and galleries. In the neighbouring village of Clapham, Ingleborough Cave is also open to the public and offers an equally spectacular underground experience

At a depth of 112 metres, Gaping Ghyll is the largest and most impressive pothole in the British Isles. On bank holiday weekends, it is often possible to descend it on a winch. Only a short walk from the road, another great natural spectacle is Alum Pot, where Alum Pot Beck dramatically plunges over 100 metres.

The village of Ingleton

Ingleton is a charming rural community, complete with shops, cafes and pubs. Facilities include a heated outdoor swimming pool (open in the summer only), a climbing wall and tennis courts. There is a golf course in nearby Bentham. The local river boasts several miles of excellent trout fishing (fishing licence available from the village newsagents). There are also several pony trekking centres in the area. Ingleton church, picturesquely situated on a hill overlooking Twiss Beck, stands on the site of the original Norman Church and still has a 13th century tower.

Around and about

To the north, it is only half an hour's drive to the Lake District, offering a feast of scenic splendour, from lakeside to mountain top. Select another direction and you will soon find yourself on a moorland route, leading to the narrow twisting roads through the impressive Forest of Bowland. In complete contrast, drive 20 miles to the west, and you reach the beaches, amusements and entertainments of the popular seaside resort of Morecambe. A 45 minute drive will take you into the heart of southern Lakeland and the pretty lakeside villages of Windermere, Bowness and Ambleside.
